Driven by the pressure to continuously increase revenue and secure competitive advantage, IT decision-makers and business unit managers want modern applications that provide a better user experience and increase market share. However, modern applications entail multiple challenges: they are more complex than traditional applications, often consist of multiple VMs, containers and services, as well as run in heterogeneous architectures.

The challenges with modern applications:

  • High cost of public cloud services and modern infrastructure platforms: Business units and DevOps teams want to take advantage of modern developer tools. They rely on expensive cloud services or invest in dedicated Kubernetes platforms to do so.
  • Infrastructure silos and multiple operating models: IT teams deal with infrastructure silos and struggle with enforcing security and isolation. At the same time, they lack the skills required for a cloud operating model. Therefore, IT is unable to rapidly provide infrastructure for modern applications.
  • Longer time to go to market for new applications: Development teams spend a significant amount of time running the networking and storage infrastructure for Kubernetes deployments. As a result, they have less time for development and new applications take longer to launch.

Deploying a developer-oriented Infrastructure with Tanzu

VMware vSphere with Tanzu is a new solution that helps deploy a Kubernetes infrastructure in a short time. Tanzu enables Kubernetes to be integrated with vSphere, providing developers and administrators with a centralized platform for their operational tasks. In this way, the development of applications can be accelerated in existing IT infrastructures. The solution, therefore, provides IT managers with familiar tools and interfaces to manage virtual machines and containers.

Collaboration of the DevOps and IT department

Critical to the successful development of modern applications is a common alignment between the responsible DevOps and IT teams – especially concerning efficiency, scalability and security of Kubernetes deployments. With the use of Tanzu, software developers and administrators operate on the same platform, which encourages exchange among each other so problems can be identified and solved faster.
